How Do I Open Remote Desktop Connection?

Windows Remote Desktop Connection is a Microsoft feature that allows you to connect to remote endpoints using a network connection. The aim of this remote access solution is to allow users to complete certain computing tasks without their physical presence. By default, Windows Remote Desktop Connection comes in all Windows-running computers for free. However, this feature is also disabled by default. To enable Windows Remote Desktop Connection on the computer you want to connect to, follow these steps accordingly:

  • Launch the System window by pressing the Start button, right-clicking Computer, and then selecting Properties.

  • Select Remote settings. If you’re required to provide an administrator password or confirmation, type the necessary login credentials first. On the Remote Desktop tab, select one of the three remote access options.

  • Click Select Users. However, if you’re an administrator and your account is automatically listed in the remote users’ list, you can skip this step already.

  • Select Add in the Remote Desktop Users dialog box.

  • Do the following steps in the Select Users or Groups dialog box.

    • Click Locations and then select the location you want to search. This will specify your search location.

    • Type the name of the account you want to add on your users’ list in the Enter the object names select tab. Click OK after.

    • Once accomplished, the name of the user you just added will be displayed in the Remote Desktop Users dialog box. Click OK, and then select OK again.

To setup Windows Remote Desktop Connection on your local computer, or the computer you’ll use to connect to the remote endpoint, follow these steps accordingly:

  • Launch the Remote Desktop Connection window by opening the Start button. Type in Remote Desktop Connection in the search box. Click the Remote Desktop Connection result.

  • Enter the name of the remote endpoint you want to connect to in the computer box. You can also enter the IP address of the computer instead of its name.
